BLUMBERGS launches GlobalPhilanthropy.ca:
The first Canadian website dedicated to legal issues in global philanthropy
Each year over 12,000 Canadian charities spend over $2.1 billion dollars on foreign activities. Mark Blumberg, a Toronto based lawyer who focuses on charity law and estate planning has launched GlobalPhilanthropy.ca, a new website devoted to providing guidance and information to individuals and charities interested in global philanthropy. It is the only Canadian website devoted exclusively to Canadian global philanthropy legal issues.
This website is geared towards helping Canadian individuals, non-profits and charities that are conducting, or interested in conducting, foreign activities including international development, humanitarian assistance, and education to understand the legal and ethical issues that they face. As well, GlobalPhilanthropy.ca will also provide insights to foreign charities interested in fundraising in Canada, especially those involved with international development and humanitarian assistance activities outside of Canada.
December is a busy month for charities and donations by Canadians. It has been Mr. Blumberg’s experience that the impact of charitable giving in developing countries achieves between 20 to 40 times more impact compared to local giving. The Canadian dollar has recently appreciated substantially in value and therefore the impact of Canadian dollars abroad will also increase. The charitable sector has become highly competitive. Donors, regulators, the media, and others, have increasingly high standards for charities and their operations and GlobalPhilanthropy.ca will assist non-profits and charities in Canada grapple with these important issues.
